Greenlake Bar & Grill

GL B&G SignGreenlake Bar & Grill has held down the fort at NE 72nd Street and Greenlake Drive for almost ten years, with a big anniversary approaching this October. The brothers behind the bar are John and James Schmidt, who grew this original idea into a string of five Neighborhood Grills throughout the Seattle area. But fear not, this is no typical chain establishment.

We sat down with General Manager Brendon Cook to get his impressions on the neighborhood after working at this location for about six months. He’s been witness to a steady stream of diverse personalities, including college kids, young families and semi-retired folks. Adjacent to one of the city’s premier destinations for runners, bikers, and various athletic enthusiasts, he has also noticed a strong emphasis on a health-conscious diet.

GL LobbyThe restaurant caters to these folks with an intimate environment with friendly service that Brendon hopes will make everyone want to come back. Green Lake may be a popular tourist destination, but the neighborhood remains a tight knit local community, including many of the staff who enjoy walking to work. The restaurant makes a point to support the community that sustains them – the walls are adorned with local artists, and they donate to many of the local school auctions and marathons that come through.

They’ve also made their mark on the social media scene, with Facebook fan pages for each of their locations and a short video introduction of each neighborhood on their website. They maintain a steady stream of almost daily posting about specials and promotions to ensure they are always in mind when you think, “Where should we go tonight…?” No matter how large the Neighborhood Grill community continues to grow, a little piece of their beginning feels cemented across the street from it’s namesake at Greenlake Bar & Grill.
